What is the Department of Midwifery? Why Should I Study?

Being one of the oldest professions known, midwifery is included in the contemporary professions with undergraduate and graduate education given today. World Health Organization (WHO) defines midwifery as a person whose education is registered in order to provide the necessary care and counseling during pregnancy and after birth, to have normal deliveries under his own responsibility and to care for the newborn. Midwives undertake important duties not only for women, but also for the family and society. It is stated that midwives have a great role to execute mother-child health and primary health services successfully, to achieve especially "Healthy Beginning of Life Goal" among "Health Goals for All in the 21st Century", and to achieve the goals of reducing maternal and infant mortality among Millennium Development Goals.

Our department of midwifery aims to train midwives equipped with the knowledge and skills to serve in every field in line with the requirements, adopting ethical values and lifelong learning, having a sense of social responsibility, advanced problem-solving skills and research knowledge and skills.

Midwifery is a profession that requires dedication and patience. It is important for the candidates who will choose this profession to be devoted, patient, strong in communication, empathetic, coping with emotional situations, quick decision-making, open to change and innovation.

Why Should I Study the Department of Midwifery at Cappadocia University?

An application laboratory designed specifically for the department of Midwifery is available to carry out the applied courses given in the department of midwifery. In these laboratories, a training class reflecting the hospital environment is created and the opportunity to gain experience close to reality is offered. In the Department of Midwifery at the School of Health Sciences, there are trainings that support personal development as well as field-specific professional knowledge and skills that our students will gain with the standard undergraduate education. In addition, our students are offered the opportunity to study abroad at universities in different countries with the Erasmus program.

What Do Midwifery Graduates Do? What are the Job Opportunities?

Midwifery graduates are mostly employed in public hospitals (training and research hospitals, public hospitals, community health centers, family practice). They may also work in private hospitals and private branch hospitals other than public hospitals. Midwives may also work as freelance midwives, they may take post-graduate education and work as academicians in higher education institutions.
